Art for Art's Sake

...Someone has said somewhere that literature and the arts influence morals. Whoever he was, he was undoubtedly a great fool. It was like saying green peas make the spring grow, whereas peas grow because it is spring...Nothing that is beautiful is indispensable to life. You might suppress the flowers, and the world would not suffer materially; yet who would wish that there were no flowers? I would rather give up potatoes that roses...

***There is nothing truly beautiful but that which can never be of any use whatsoever; everything useful is ugly, for it is the expression of some need, and man's needs are ignoble and disgusting like his own poor infirm nature...***
